About
For our semester project, we were assigned the challenge of creating a media installation centered around the concept of invasive species or neobiota. In our project, we deliberately opted to focus on human beings as the subject matter instead of animals. This choice was motivated by the recognition that humans represent the quintessential invasive species.
The "Four Pest Campaign," initiated during Mao Zedong's leadership in China, offered a compelling historical example that resonated with our project's theme. This campaign was named after the four perceived pests: sparrows, rats, flies, and mosquitoes, and it serves as a poignant illustration of how human intervention can significantly impact ecosystems.
Focus
Immersive Experience
We wanted to involve the three senses in our design to create a fully immersive experience.
• animation (sight)
• sound (hearing)
• pot-tapping (touch)

animation
It begins with a calm sparrow perched on a tree trunk. As the animation progresses, the sparrow becomes distressed and tries to flee from the loud pounding of pot by visitors to the exhibition. The sequence ends with the sparrow exhausted and finally falling to its death.
frontal view
This is an overall vector illustration of our model that represents every part of our project and their functions. It should also give an overall idea of our concept.

screens

We have chosen a height that gives visitors an immersive experience and makes them feel part of the exhibition.
A rough sketch of the dimensions and how we imagined our design for the exhibition should look.
