About

The Villa rustica near Lauffen am Neckar was a Roman estate with four buildings, dating back to around 150 AD. It was abandoned around 260 AD during the Limesfall. The site features well-preserved remains, including a sophisticated water supply system and a bathing facility. It is accessible to visitors but lacks facilities. Artifacts from the site are housed in a local museum.

Our assignment is to design and build a visitor centre on the land to the south of the car park. This centre will serve as an informative hub for visitors and tourists seeking an insight into the Roman estate.

Overview

The space program outlines the various components of the visitor center, including entrance and sales area, exhibition space, screening room, multipurpose room, restrooms, and various utility rooms to serve the needs of visitors and staff.

Designated Area

A rough sketch of the measurements and how we imagined our design for the exhibition should look like

Visitor Center

I took inspiration from the architectural styles of ancient Rome, which is evident in my design. To create a contrast to the intricate details often associated with authentic Roman architecture, I focused on simplicity as a guiding principle.

Rendering

A visual rendering of the architectural design within the designated area as specified in the assignment.

Back Side

Considering the significant empty space on the back side of the building, I opted to enhance it with a fitting mural. This decision led me to select one of Michelangelo's renowned masterpieces, 'The Creation of Adam.' The choice was guided by the concept that, given the building's roof extending towards the sky, this painting would be the most apt and harmonious addition.
